Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend
In keeping with the goal of supporting clinician-scientists, and in light of the challenging funding environment, the Department of Medicine Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend offers a stipend to exceptional clinician-scientists in the early phases of their careers. The details of the support provided, along with eligibility criteria, are set out below. Full-time clinical faculty members in the academic position description of clinician-scientist who are recruited to the Department of Medicine as of July 1, 2015 at the rank of assistant professor are eligible to apply. Only those recruits who are the result of an external search are eligible for Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend.
If recruited at the rank of lecturer, associate professor, or full professor, eligibility for Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend will be determined at the discretion of the Department Chair, and if agreed to, may result in a shorter funding term.
Funding will consist of $40,000 CAD per year for five (5) years and will be paid through the individual faculty member’s practice plan. Please note that the amount and duration of funding is subject to change, based on the availability of departmental funding.
The start-up stipend will continue throughout the first five years following recruitment, unless the faculty member receives a salary award from another source. This includes, but is not exclusive to, endowed chairs (hospital or campus based), funding from an Alternate Funding Plan, and peer review salary awards. In cases where salary support is awarded, startup funding from the Department of Medicine will be stopped until the term of the additional salary support is over, or the five year window from the time of their faculty appointment has elapsed, whichever comes first. If the salary award ends and the faculty member is still within five years of his/her initial appointment, the startup stipend will be reinstated. If the salary award continues beyond the five year window of funding, startup stipend will not be reinstated, but the faculty member will receive a $10,000 CAD annual bonus on top of their external award during the five year start-up term.
For example, a faculty member is awarded Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend and in year two of funding they are awarded an endowed chair with a four year term. This would result in the termination of Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend, which would not be reinstated at the end of the endowed chair term, as the initial five year term would have elapsed, but the faculty member would receive a $10,000 CAD on top of the endowed chair for the remaining three years. However, if the endowed chair term was only two years, the Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend would be reinstated for one final year at the end of the endowed chair term and no bonus would be provided.
When the five years from the time of appointment is over, the faculty member will be eligible to apply for further support by taking part in the Clinician-Scientist Merit Review process. Please refer to the Clinician-Scientist Merit Review criteria for more details.
Department of Medicine Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend is paid directly to individual faculty member's practice plans. Practice Plans are requested to submit a single invoice to the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, indicating the agreed amount of $40,000 CAD per year for a period of five year and referencing the individual faculty member to be paid. Please note that the Clinician-Scientist Start-up Stipend is HST eligible.
